Dilkens vs BIAs

Mayor Dilkens recently conducted a presser to publicly threaten a number of local business improvement associations with legal action and possible dissolution. His reasoning being that the BIAs had violated certain municipal act regulations. The alleged violation according to Dilkens is that the BIAs had chosen to support, by way of financial donations, the CAMPP sponsored LPAT appeal regarding the proposed location for the new regional hospital.

Regardless of which side of the argument you take, we should all be concerned with the ongoing bullying behaviour of our mayor. This is not the first time that Dilkens has acted in a heavy handed manner toward perceived opposition. He did so this time without the simple courtesy of first privately consulting with the affected BIAs.

Instead, with little notice, he gathered a group of high profile citizens to join him onstage with local media present to declare themselves as representatives of the “silent majority.”

“The silent majority has been very silent letting the process play out,” he said. “But we’re certainly not going to be quiet any longer and let a very small minority group control the conversation on this issue.”

That statement is blatantly untrue. David Musyj and others have been in various news media supporting the proposed location while simultaneously vilifying the efforts of CAMPP to present the opposing viewpoint.

How Mr. Dilkens came to the conclusion he represents the majority opinion is beyond me. Recent anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. To my knowledge there has been no scientific survey or controlled poll to determine the support for the proposed location of the new hospital.

Mr. Dilkens should stop using his office as a bully pulpit. The mayor continues to act in a manner that demeans the office he occupies. This is not in the best interest of our city.
